The Purpose of Life is a Life of Purpose

Knowing one’s purpose in life is what posters and self-help books are made of.  The idea is when we find that purpose, we will know our life path and there will be a pot of gold at the end.  But what exactly is purpose?

We grapple with our identity as a teen, settle into the responsibilities of our building years, and then try to shift into retirement reflecting on where our journey has led us hoping to still have a sense of purpose in our lives. At all ages we need to feel that we have a reason for living.

William Damon, a professor at Stanford, has spent nearly 20 years studying how people develop purpose in work, family, and civic life. As he describes it, purpose is something of a chemical reaction that takes place when our skills meet the needs of the world. I can have a calling on my life to teach and feel that is my purpose, however, if I never teach, I will not achieve purpose in my life.

Knowing your skills and your interests—and in a larger sense, your identity—is just the beginning.  When you engage in service to others with those skills and interests, THEN you will discover your purpose in life.  We were not created to be an island but interwoven through service into the lives, families, churches, and communities we have built.

If you are not connected to our Galaxy Digital site and the serving opportunities there,  I would love to talk to you.  There are all sorts of opportunities to connect you to a deep sense of purpose.
